SANTA RITA, Monterey County — October 2026. Santa Rita was once regarded as a possible center for the Salinas Valley before railroad development favored neighboring Salinas, according to a historical study published by the Monterey History and Art Association in 1996.
The town before the railway
Drawing on an 1881 local history, historian Meg Welden writes that J. M. Soto laid out Santa Rita in 1867. The settlement, also recorded under the name New Republic, had a store, Catholic church, newspaper and a county hospital associated with Dr. S. M. Archer. These institutions speak to the ambitions of the nineteenth-century settlement, not modern municipal status.
Why did Salinas prevail?
The historical study explains that railroad engineers considered land associated with Soto, while Eugene Sherwood offered land for a depot and right-of-way in Salinas. The railway ultimately went through Salinas, where the first train arrived in September 1872. The archive identifies that rail-routing decision as a pivotal cause in the shift of regional commerce and population toward Salinas.
Why the history matters
Communities do not grow simply because of their initial promises. The location of transportation links, depots and commercial investment can fundamentally change regional prospects. Santa Rita remains a place with its own history even though it did not emerge as the valley’s major city.

The railway events discussed occurred in the nineteenth century. This is an archival local-history feature, not a current railroad construction announcement.
